“Try to Finish Him Off”: Months After Rematch Debacle, Dmitry Bivol Breaks His Silence on Canelo Alvarez vs Jermell Charlo

For long, Canelo Alvarez made it clear to chase Dmitry Bivol for a rematch. Many expected it to happen after the John Ryder fight in May. But a shocker of news lay in wait for fans. Alvarez will defend his title again with another undisputed champion, Jermell Charlo, in the opposite corner. Bivol, on the other hand, hasn’t entered the ring since his last title defense against Gilberto Ramirez. Given that he is only the second boxer to have defeated one of the faces of boxing, it should be easy for Bivol to postulate how his former rival’s battle plan pans out against the ‘Iron Man.’

During last year’s WBA (Super) Light Heavyweight title defense, Dmitry Bivol traded punches with Canelo Alvarez. The Mexican champion was on his second attempt at 175 pounds. It was a reasonably doable task. More so, he had already succeeded in a previous attempt in 2019. But the match against Bivol was anything but similar to Alvarez’s easy knockout victory over Sergey Kovalev. The six-foot-tall Russian foiled the Mexican champion’s venture to become a five-division champion, thus handing him a second career loss.

So Fight Hub TV caught up with the Kyrgyzstan-born fighter and asked for his thoughts on the upcoming Canelo Alvarez versus Jermell Charlo bout. Bivol explained that, in all probability, the undisputed Super Middleweight champion would make a move forward and push towards an early stoppage by throwing a range of combinations at Charlo. He said, “I see that he will move forward and try to finish him with one-two punches, you know….”

Then he added that the ‘Iron Man’ at the opposite corner might, in turn, try to create distances and be constantly on the move: “…and Charlo will try to keep his him on the distance, and he will try to move….” However, the Light Heavyweight champion immediately presented a disclaimer that his points were shared per what he foresaw. Otherwise, he is not an expert enough to make a worthy prediction.

The 175-pound division currently lacks an undisputed title holder. Hence, many fans have been seeking the mouth-watering match between unified champion Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol. However, given the WBC’s stance on Russian fights, it’s a wait-and-see game about how an exciting line-up like Bivol-Beterbiev could materialize. Otherwise, the talks for a rematch with Canelo reportedly failed because of financial disagreements. Hence, if reports are to be believed, Bivol’s fans might hopefully see a return by October.
