It’s Valentine’s Day. It is the day to celebrate love, spend time with loved ones, and express gratitude for being part of our lives. That’s why, despite his hectic schedule, Mauricio Sulaiman took time out to greet and thank all the fans and followers. Masses aside, even for boxing’s premier sanctioning body, the day holds a very significant meaning.
The 54-year-old honcho took over the reins of the WBC nearly a decade ago. Under his leadership, the organization has been making significant progress. More notably, alongside other prominent sanctioning bodies, the WBC has been playing a pivotal role in aligning boxing with the evolving times that we live in. So undoubtedly, when a special day falls, it is important to express gratitude to all those who have walked by your side without fail. Mauricio Sulaiman, for one, is not the kind of person who forgets such moments and people.

Sixty-One Years of Excellence, In Service of Boxing: Mauricio Sulaiman
The WBC president shared a short clip with fans and followers sometime ago. He appears to have stepped out for his routine fitness walk as part of the ‘WBC Walk’. With beautiful historic and architectural buildings appearing in the backdrop, Sulaiman, facing the camera, could be seen walking along the neatly laid brick streets. So he offered apologies for not wearing his sports cap. The Mexico City-born head revealed, “WBC Walk here from Rome; I’am sorry I have no cap; I’ve been traveling all over the place.”
Then he added, it’s a day to remember. On this day and month, sixty-one years ago, the WBC came into existence. “Today’s a special day. It is WBC’s 61st Anniversary since its foundation,” he said. Later, he thanked everyone and wished them a happy Valentine’s Day: “Today is a Happy Valentine’s Day. I wish you all a great, loving day. Friends, family, and, of course the loved ones. …..let’s have a great day…Saludos!”
The same message was shared through Instagram as well. Nevertheless, many followers joined in, congratulating Mauricio Sulaiman and the WBC for all their accomplishments and wishing them the best.

So it all began on February 14, 1963. Representatives from the initial eleven countries met for the first time in Mexico City. However, today, the organization has membership in 161 countries. In 1975, after progressing through different levels, Mauricio Sulaiman’s father, Jose Sulaiman Chagnón, became the WBC President. He held the position until his passing in 2014. Under the current president, the WBC is poised to achieve new milestones, ensuring that the popularity of the sport soars globally.
