Since the time they get drafted, NBA players have to deal with constant media attention. The greater heights you reach as a player, the more fame becomes a constant in your life. So, for the recent Hall of Fame inductee Dwyane Wade, the glamour has always been a part of it. However, that level of attention also becomes a big part of one’s family’s life. Especially if your other half is a mainstream name as well. Detailing her own journey in the public eye is superstar model turned actress Gabrielle Union.

Of course, with an uber-popular husband and her own mainstream career taking off, the Wade family is constantly at the center of the public eye.

How Dwyane Wade’s wife controls her narrative

While the process can be uplifting, it is also exhausting. Further, there is a fear of a single misstep ruining your entire career. How does Gabrielle deal with that? Talking to Mrs. Westbrook on her new podcast, The Relationship Chronicles, Union gave an insightful perspective on the matter.

I think for the most part I don’t talk about or I don’t share anything that I haven’t got a firm grasp of. Or, a solid perspective of and have been to therapy for a while.” Infamously, the Wade household was ridiculed for their money-managing practices.

Simply put, Union understands the consequences of such a misstep. “Otherwise, I’m just not ready, and that is my boundary. If I’m ready, all bets are off…I’ll talk about anything with anyone. But, if I’m not healed or on the path of healing, it’s…Self-flagellation – I’m just talking and talking at that point.”

For Gab, the secret to her own peace is in helping others. “My peace lies in being able to be a source of light for other people who are immersed in darkness. Because I’ve been in a lot of darkness for a lot of different reasons.” Further, she detailed the reasoning behind her mindset.

Gabrielle Union’s journey through darkness

As she recalls, during her own bouts with mental health, her friends put her back on the right path. As a result, that same mentality is something she has embraced. For her, those problems reached a fever pitch some 25 years ago. However, she had a strong support system.

Tisha Campbell, you know, paid for [my] therapy 25 years ago…And this is the therapist I have to this day 25 years later…You have a way out and it is your responsibility. Or, I feel that it’s my responsibility to provide a path, at least, towards the light if I can.” 

Throughout her journey, Gabrielle, along with Beau Wade, has made it a mission to make others’ lives better. In the process, they’ve changed and altered millions. Today, as an inspiration to so many, she continues to bring people “to the light“.
