Like most superstar athletes, O’Neal had multiple luxury mansions worth millions. Notably, the 4x NBA champion built a massive 76,000-square-foot house in Miami, Florida. After the divorce, Shaq found it hard to live alone on the property without his children for whom he built the house. So he sold the residence to a dentist for $11 million. Shaq could have seen his net worth reduced considerably in the divorce settlement if it wasn’t for a prenup. Notably, the Hall of Famer was close to paying around $200 million in alimony despite the prenup. O’Neal and Shaunie had a prenup in place which is valid in the state of Florida. But it would have been null and void in the state of California; where Shaunie and her children lived at the time.
However, Shaq was playing for the Miami Heat during their initial separation, and so the divorce proceedings were filed in Florida. So the prenup was valid, and it helped him not pay $200 million.
