The first and only NASCAR Cup Series race was held in 1956. During that time the arrangement was known as the Grand National Series.
The race, advanced as "America's First International Stock Car Road Race," was authoritatively authorized by NASCAR. However, the FIA offered help for the occasion. Hubert Schroeder filled in as race manager.
As street racing was uncommon for the arrangement at that point, theory among fans rotated around American vehicles' capacity to move the course. There were 25 American vehicles, a Jaguar Mark VII, and four Renaults on the circuit.
On August 12, the first race was held at the track. Speedy Thompson led the pack of the racer. An engine failure constrained him. Tim Flock drove the last ten laps to win the inaugural race.
In 2010, races were again run on the Road America track. This time it was the NASCAR Xfinity Series. It supplanted the arrangement's race at the Milwaukee Mile.
In June 2020, it was accounted for that Road America was in negotiations to have the Cup Series in 2021. When NASCAR uncovered the 2021 Cup Series plan on September 30, 2020, Road America was once again added for the Fourth of July weekend.
Road America became one of seven road courses on the 2021 Cup calendar, the most in series history following the late addition of the Go Bowling 235
The Sports Car Club of America was the principal coordinator of the races. In 1950, the Chicago Region SCCA and the Village of Elkhart Lake coordinated the primary street race at Elkhart Lake.
The first race was the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) on September 10, 1955.
