The Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs will clash on Sunday in one of the biggest showdowns of the weekend. This AFC West battle will set the tone for the rest of the season. With a KC win, the Chiefs will close the three-game gap to Denver and take the early tiebreaker. With a Denver win, the Broncos open the gap to four games, essentially eliminating Kansas City from clenching its 10th straight division title.

Before we get into the start, sit recommendations. Here’s a table breaking down how many points each team gives up to each position group, and where that ranks across the league.

Both of these defenses are pretty dang good. Neither side really has a weakness. Ideally, you wouldn’t start anybody against either of these defenses, but fantasy isn’t an ideal world all the time, so sometimes tough decisions have to be made, which is why I’m giving you the best starts and sits for this big-time AFC West showdown.

Travis Kelce, TE, Kansas City Chiefs

If there’s any position to start against Denver, it’s tight end, and luckily for Kansas City, they have a good one in Travis Kelce. Not only is it the most favorable matchup you’ll find against Denver, but Kelce always seems to show up in big games. Whenever Patrick Mahomes gets into trouble, he’s looking for his big tight end, so start him this week.

RJ Harvey, RB, Denver Broncos

This is a high-risk, high-reward play. I don’t really love starting anyone on Denver’s offense, but with J.K. Dobbins out, RJ Harvey is in line to get a ton of work this weekend. I know Harvey hasn’t enjoyed the easiest start to his career, but he was great in college, and now he gets the chance to be a lead back. Plus, he’s been a great receiver for the Broncos in recent weeks, so he should see a healthy amount of targets this week as well.

Rashee Rice, WR, Kansas City Chiefs

Even though I don’t think the Chiefs will score a whole lot of points, Rashee Rice should have a big day. He is far and away Kansas City’s best receiver, and he should continue to see 7+ targets per game no matter who they’re playing. Someone’s gotta catch the ball for Kansas City, and it’s going to be Rice or Kelce more often than not.

Harrison Butker, K, Kansas City Chiefs

This might be my first time ever recommending starting a kicker in this series, but here we are. The Broncos are very good at getting off the field, especially in the red zone. They have one of the best red zone stoppage rates in the league, so teams kick a ton of field goals against them. I think the Chiefs will be more efficient than most in the red area, but they should still settle for a few field goals this week.

Kansas City Defense

I’m very low on Denver’s offense right now. They’ve been very inconsistent, and Bo Nix has looked a bit off these past couple of weeks. Add on the fact that Kansas City already has a top five scoring defense, and I just don’t see a world where the Broncos’ offense has a whole lot of success.

Bo Nix, QB, Denver Broncos

Like I just said, Nix has been off these last couple of games, and even when he’s been on this year, he’s been a bit inconsistent. I don’t see him or the rest of the offense magically figuring things out this week against one of the best defenses in football, so he’s a sit for me this week.

Kareem Hunt, RB, Kansas City Chiefs

There’s a good chance Isiah Pacheco doesn’t play this week, putting Kareem Hunt in line to see the bulk of the work on the ground for Kansas City, but I don’t think he’s going to have a fun time. Denver’s run defense is excellent, and in big games like this, coaches like to put the team on the quarterback’s back, especially when their quarterback is Patrick Mahomes.

Troy Franklin, WR, Denver Broncos

A lot of people have picked Troy Franklin up in fantasy these past couple of weeks. He’s seeing about 10 targets per game over his last four, but he’s going to have a tough time against this Kansas City defense. At risk of sounding like a broken record, I don’t see the Broncos having much offensive success in this one, so almost their entire offense is a sit for me this week.
