The 32-year-old Briton clinched his fourth world title at the last race in Mexico. Ahead of this weekend’s race weekend in Brazil, Christian Horner dropped a bombshell. He revealed he has previously sat down for discussions with Hamilton. Horner said “We had a couple of chats. It never really gained significant momentum but he’s obviously a driver we rate extremely highly.”

The talks were likely to have been at the end of 2012 when Hamilton was said to be ‘desperate’ to drive for Red Bull. In an interview last year, Horner claimed Hamilton twice approached him about signing for the team. Instead, Lewis Hamilton decided to swap McLaren for Mercedes – a decision justified by the three world titles he has won since.

Christian Horner on the Brit’s interest in Red Bull

Horner said last year: “He was desperate to drive for the team. In 2012, he wanted to come and drive for us, but there was no way we could accommodate him while Sebastian was with us. Then before he signed for Mercedes he was very keen to drive for Red Bull for 2013.”

Hamilton goes to Mexico looking to end the season on a high. He has already wrapped up the championship with two races left. He said it is important to win those two races. It is important to solidify what he has worked on this year.

“If I was to sit back now and just relax and let someone else take the glory, sure it would be nice for other people but that is not what I am about. So this weekend I am still faced with the same challenges as the last races. Red Bull have really picked up the pace and will be pretty strong, Ferrari have picked up their performance, so it is going to be close.”
