Browns Recruit Greg Newsome II Looking to ‘Bridge Cleveland Locker Room Together’

Cleveland Browns bolstered their defense by drafting Northwestern’s Greg Newsome II in the 2021 NFL Draft. Kevin Stefanski and the Browns drafted the 20-year-old starlet in the 1st round (26th overall). He made a name for himself in high school, playing for Glenbard North in Illinois.

Since joining NWU in 2018, Newsome has been a consistent performer in the Big Ten college football circuit. In 17 games, Newsome registered 71 tackles and 1 interception. Greg was the 4th cornerback to be taken in 2021 and will be expected to challenge for a starting berth in the coming months.

Greg Newsome II‘s arrival in Cleveland could help the Browns push for a deeper run in the playoffs. Quarterback Baker Mayfield, DE Myles Garrett, RBs Kareem Hunt, and Nick Chubb impressed as Kevin Stefanski led his team to the AFC Divisional Round Playoffs last season.

This was just his 1st season in charge and he is expected to take the Browns to even greater heights in the years to come. Is Newsome II the latest piece of the puzzle that propels Cleveland one step closer to a Super Bowl appearance?

In a media interaction for the first time as a Cleveland Browns player, Greg spoke about his short-term goals regarding his career in the NFL.

“I’m a versatile player. I can do it all on the field. Then to that locker room, I’m a cool guy to be around. A guy that will bridge this locker room together,” Newsome said via NFL Network’s Will Selva.

Newsome will go up against the free-agent acquisition in Troy Hill, injury-returnee Greedy Williams, and Pro Bowler Denzel Ward for a spot on the Browns’ defense. Coach Stefanski will be delighted with the options available to him at cornerback.

Besides that, the arrival of DE Jadeveon Clowney means that the AFC North big boys boast one of the best defensive rosters in the league. They might have up to 10 key performers in their starting line-up as the season progresses in the coming months.
