World No. 3 Dominic Thiem has lifted the bar for the new crop of players. His maiden Grand Slam victory at the US Open 2020 highlighted that aspect. Prior to him winning in Flushing Meadows, the Austrian had made it to the final of a major on three occasions but fell short each time. 

His first major stride was in the 2018 final at Roland Garros against the Spanish legend Rafael Nadal. In the following year, there was a repeat of the previous year’s final. Early in the 2020 season, the Austrian lost to Novak Djokovic in an epic 5-set thriller at the Australian Open. However, he never lost the desire to cross that final hurdle. 

Dominic Thiem and Nicolas Massu Have Begun Partnership in 2019

In his journey to fulfill his dreams, there have been a few key people who have been instrumental in helping him become the player he is today. Dominic’s current coach, Nicolas Massu, has certainly helped him in this route. The pair joined hands in early 2019 and his performances at the majors indicate the Chilean coach’s influence. 

In recent days, Nicolas tested positive for the coronavirus and it seemed doubtful that he would join Dominic in Melbourne for this year’s Australian Open.

However, there has been a positive development in this regard. Nicolas feels confident that he can be present in his pupil’s camp. Although, he does believe Wolfgang Thiem (Dominic’s father) manages his job efficiently. 

Speaking on these recent developments, he said, “He can easily to that (coach his son), but I hope that I will be there in time for the Grand Slam.”

The Chilean coach is in quarantine at his residence in Miami. It would surely give an added boost for the recently crowned US Open champion to compete for this season’s Australian Open crown.
