In the NFL, the quarterback position is regarded as the most important one. Recently, NFL analyst, Colin Cowherd tallied his top 10 list of quarterbacks in the AFC division. According to him, a quarterback is defined by his ‘pop year’. In layman terms, a pop year is when practically everything lines up for them.

According to him, the QBs should be judged on their overall careers and take away the highs and lows. In other words, the law of averages applies to this scenario. Finally, Cowherd spoke about the AFC quarterback list, and who features were on this list. Cowherd insisted that career stats do not interest him, instead, he is focusing on the present situation.

1. Patrick Mahomes

According to him, this was a very easy choice because he is an excellent pocket passer and has great movement. Mahomes also boasts of the highest passing rate in the NFL. Although he tends to take a few risks, Patrick Mahomes is the complete package. Cowherd predicted that if the Kansas City Chiefs have a good offense, they could be the favorites. He even compared Mahomes to an Aaron Rodgers of six years ago and without any injuries.

2. Lamar Jackson

According to Cowherd, defensive coordinators have a tough choice when asked to face Patrick Mahomes or Lamar Jackson. While Mahomes may beat them, Jackson is perfectly capable of absolutely destroying them. As his career progresses, Jackson is only improving more and more with each passing year. In addition to a fair number of accolades, he is the youngest MVP winner.

3. Deshaun Watson

Last year, Watson nabbed 34 touchdowns and 300+ yard passing in a playoff game. In that same game, he took three touchdowns and had no giveaways. In spite of this, his team still managed to lose, so he was the only bright spark in an otherwise miserable day in the office.

4. Ben Roethlisberger

According to Cowherd, the last time he saw him play, he led the NFL statistics in terms of passing yards. Roethlisberger is also part of a solid unit, at least from a defensive standpoint. The 38-year old has registered around 5000 passing yards throughout his career.

5. Josh Allen

Allen actually led the team to a 10-win streak for the first time since the 1990s. Although he is a little ‘raw’, Allen has had some breakthrough moments that turned opinions in his favour. Interestingly, last year he was the only quarterback with no completions.

6. Cam Newton

Cam Newton has his work cut out for him, because he has no decent tight end to back him up. In other words, the New England Patriots have a very limited offensive team. In fact, that was what pushed Tom Brady away from the Pats and head to Tampa Bay.

7. Baker Mayfield

With Mayfield on the team, the Cleveland Browns have no excuse and should register a winning record. Cowherd confessed that he would be surprised if they didn’t make the playoffs, but not surprised. He predicted that Mayfield will be more humble and will benefit from more protection.

8. Sam Darnold

According to the analyst, Darnold is a truly special player. Compared to Baker Mayfield, he is bigger, stronger and more athletic. However, he has a number of limitations, especially when it comes to his teammates. Cowherd believes that if Mayfield and Darnold swapped teams, the difference would be staggering.

9. Philip Rivers

What works against Rivers’ is his lack of athleticism and he throws too many picks. Admittedly, the Indianapolis Colts have an underrated defense and running game. So, this is why Rivers slots in so far down the order. According to Cowherd, watching Philip RIvers was like watching Eli Manning in his last two years.
