In some big news coming from the United States Tennis Association (USTA), the US Open is all but confirmed for its 2020 edition. Adam Zagoria reports for Forbes that a formal announcement is expected soon.

As per him, the U.S.T.A’s agreements with the men’s and women’s tours are at the final stage. The prospective dates for the tournament are August 31-September 13. To follow through with the social distancing guidelines, fans and media will not get entry.

However, there’s no official word out on that particular aspect yet. Despite that, the tournament might suffer from another big issue. Most of the big tennis stars are expected to refrain from participation.

Why is there a question mark on big star participation at the US Open?

As of this moment, big stars like Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal have expressed reservations about the US Open. Djokovic was not comfortable with the idea that he might have to do away with his extensive team.

Roger Federer, on the other hand, has already been ruled out of the entire 2020 season due to knee surgery. Meanwhile, Patrick Mouratouglou, who is the coach of Serena Williams, had speculated that Serena might miss the US Open.

As per him, the restrictions mean that she has no chance of taking her daughter along. She might not be willing to take that risk. With that, the US Open might lack some major star power.

Combined with that is the immediate aftermath. French Open starts by September end which leaves little to no time for players to rejuvenate. This might mean a choice between the two tournaments which can further lead to less competition showing up.

For fans though, this is a moment to rejoice. After all speculations that we might not get any grand slam this year, this news comes as a welcome surprise. There’s also a chance that we get to see new champions crowned due to the usual ones probably missing out.
