UFC star Conor McGregor became the latest sports personality to help in the battle against the Coronavirus pandemic. Ireland has seen over 1500 confirmed Covid-19 cases, causing the deaths of 7 people in the country.

The Notorious responded to the relief efforts and announced a €1 million donation in “personal protective equipment” to hospitals in Ireland’s Leinster region, the worst affected in McGregor’s homeland. McGregor is the first big-name UFC fighter to announce a donation towards healthcare to help fight the pandemic.

One certainly hopes that he will not be the last to do so. Medical healthcare professionals need all available financial assistance at this time.

McGregor joins a host of other sports stars who are supporting the fight against the Coronavirus pandemic. Zlatan Ibrahimovic set up an online fundraiser with proceeds going to hospitals in Northern Italy.  Italy, which is the worst-hit country in Europe, has also seen Valentino Rossi collaborate with several entrepreneurs and donate to the ’Together for Marche Nord’ Association, which purchased new respirators for the Marche Nord Hospital.

Italy has also been assisted by a huge €10 million donations by the Agnelli family. One of their subsidies, the Ferrari team, will make F1 technology available to help combat Coronavirus. The Ferrari team seeks to double the production of fans to make respirators.

It is a good initiative to see sports personalities use their resources to take care of their fans. This gesture will win hearts, and maybe even earn McGregor some new fans. The decision to donate €1 million worth of healthcare equipment also has the potential to trigger a chain where more UFC fighters come forward to help the world with the battle against the Coronavirus. The fans are certainly saluting McGregor’s noble gesture.
