World Number two tennis player Simona Halep battled past Elena Rybakina in the finals of Dubai Duty-Free Tennis Championships 2020. With that victory, the Romanian ace earned her 20th career title. And she shares the sixth spot with Victoria Azarenka on the list of most number of WTA career titles.
Keeping all her epic match-wins and her Grand Slam her trophies aside, Halep has the longest streak inside the top-ten WTA rankings amongst the active women.
Simona Halep: The most consistent active women on the WTA Tour
The superwoman Halep reflected upon her phenomenal consistency in the sport. “I always had in my mind that I had to be consistent. I don’t like the way you win a tournament and then you don’t do anything for a few months,” said Simona Halep.
“I like to build my power to build my consistency every week. Since I met Daren (Cahill) I thought we had to look into the big picture, not just that week. So I did that pretty well. That’s the way I could stay such a long time on the top,” she added.
In the era of inconsistent women’s tennis, Halep has resided inside the first-ten column for 317 weeks and counting. And it’s the 10th longest streak in the WTA history.
“I think this (consistency) makes me more proud than winning titles because if you are able to be there, you have everything like power, strong mental and physical also very form. I think it’s a good position and I’m enjoying it,” World Number two Halep mentioned.
In the Dubai finals, she played a classic match against Rybakina and defeated her 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(5). They tussled for two-and-a-half hours and the winner was unknown until the last point of the match.
“It’s very special to be in 2020, 20th anniversary of this tournament, 20th title,” Halep said. “It’s pretty special. I just want to enjoy it. It’s very, very beautiful.”
