Astralis veteran Nicolai “dev1ce” Reedtz had recently moved to Ninjas in Pyjamas earlier this year. He was all ready to play his debut game for NiP. In fact, it was going to be his first game away from Astralis in a long while. The stage was set for dev1ce to make his first NiP appearance against Anonymo Esports in the Flashpoint Counter-Strike: Global Offensive tournament.

The Counter-Strike: Global Offensive debut did end up being extremely theatrical. Unfortunately, it wasn’t even close to how NiP or dev1ce would have wanted it to go. Right from the start of the match, NiP had been facing technical issues. However, they somehow managed to draw the BO3 at 1:1.

Problems arose when NiP had to delay the final round due to server issues. Ultimately, both teams agreed on a common server as per FACEIT rules, and Anonymo ended up winning the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive match.

NiP force Anonymo to replay Flashpoint match

It turns out Anonymo counted its chickens before they hatched while celebrated its victory. Hours after the team clouded dev1ce’s debut game, Anonymo received news that it would have to replay the match. It turns out NiP and dev1ce faced major packet loss during the third round as well. Therefore, they urged the tournament organizers to conduct a rematch.

In fact, Flashpoint reached out to Anonymo and informed the team that it has two options. Either the team plays a BO1 or the erroneous match on Monday or play the full BO3 on Tuesday. The request, or rather ultimatum, disappointed Anonymo as they had less than 24 hours to make their decision.

The Counter-Strike: Global Offensive underdogs, who made it to the tournament going through the tough qualifiers, chose not to bow down to the giants. Anonymo, being the David in this David vs. Goliath match-up, soon put up their side of the story. Through a Twitter post, the team explained how NiP and Flashpoint were practically forcing them for a rematch since it made more sense from a business point of view.

Anonymo’s statement attracted the attention of multiple former and current professional CS:GO players. The community soon came to defend the underdog team and criticize NiP and Flashpoint. The mere fact that dev1ce’s debut didn’t go as planned shouldn’t be why a team that won fair and square should replay its match.

The Counter-Strike: Global Offensive community agreed that the issues could have been dealt with in multiple ways. In fact, when the teams and the organizers knew there were technical issues, they could have moved the match forwards. However, since the match was completed, they should not bully the winners into a rematch.

Regardless of what the outcome of this fiasco would be, Anonymo has certainly gained a lot of respect. On the other hand, the long-awaited debut from dev1ce has only put NiP under criticism, contrary to its expectations.
