COVID-19 ”Knocks-down” Boxing for an Indefinite Period

Boxing is currently fighting an opponent it can’t knock down – COVID-19. The virus has disrupted several major events as most fights stand cancelled or postponed

The Virus originated in Wuhan China and has spread across multiple countries causing major damage to the boxing fraternity. It’s a sharp contrast to how the year started with many promising Boxing matches being held earlier this year.

Several major bouts stand cancelled with Shakur Stevenson’s fight postponed and Irish Hero Michael Conlan’s fight called off. This represents a sad state of affairs for the boxing world as  The monetary and viewership  losses are huge. moreover fans are denied quality match-ups.

However, despite the ”infodemic” of COVID-19, certain promotions are going on with the event. Matchroom Boxing announced they’re going ahead with their events. Dereck Chisora announced his fight against Oleksandr Usyk with the fight set for May 23rd. However, due to the Virus, this is not a good idea.

“In keeping with the stoic position of the Government today however we remain optimistic to present an incredible night of boxing to a packed 02 crowd and there are only a few tickets remaining,”

Irrespective of the ‘’Stoic’’ position, The fact that people are buying tickets and filling up stadiums is wrong. Several European leagues are cancelled, with Serie A and the champions league postponed along with other major international competitions.

This is a red flag day for boxing with boxing fans deprived of major fights due to the sudden outbreak. With the percentage infected increasing by the day, the sports community might be forced into a ‘’Quarantine’’.
