Arguably the best women’s tennis player Serena Williams has won over $88 million in career prize money, more than any other female athlete.

Here are some crazy facts that you might have not known about the tennis sensation!

Serena is currently ranked World No. 16. but has reached number 1 several times in her professional career and became the oldest female player to do so.

Serena has won 72 career single titles, 23 ATP double titles and two mixed double titles. This includes 37 Grand Slam titles –  23 singles titles, 14 doubles titles and two mixed doubles titles. Serena is also a four-time Olympic gold medalist.

Serena and Venus Williams have both appeared in the Simpsons episode Tennis the Menace. She was also a voice on the Playhouse Disney show Higglytown Heroes.

Serena has three more sisters other than Venus. Lyndrea, Isha and Yetunde. All three are athletic but don’t play professional tennis! Serena is the youngest. Yetunde was murdered in 2003.

Serena Williams is an undergraduate student at the University of Massachusetts Amherst through the University Without Walls program.

Serena and Venus Williams are also part-owners of the Miami Dolphins; and are the first African-American females to obtain ownership in an NFL franchise.

Williams went on a profanity-laced outburst against a line judge who calls her for a foot fault in the U.S. Open semifinals against Kim Clijsters in 2009. Clijsters is awarded a penalty point to win the match. The Grand Slam committee later fines Williams a record $82,500 and places her on probation for the next two years.

In 2008, she established the Serena Williams Foundation, to assist American youth touched by violent crime and also underprivileged children around the world. Serena Williams was also appointed as a UNICEF International Goodwill Ambassador in September 2011.

In 2008, Williams provided aid to fund construction of a Secondary School in Kenya. The foundation also helps underprivileged children attain university scholarships in the United States. In 2016, she partnered with Helping Hands Jamaica to build the Salt Marsh Primary School for Jamaican youth.

Serena loves getting her nails done, and in 2010 she became a certified nail technician in preparation for her upcoming nail collection with a company called Hair Tech.

She is estimated to be worth about $180 million. She earns more than $8 million a year through her playing.

Recently, she featured in a doubles match against Roger Federer. Her partner was Frances Tiafoe and Federer’s partner was Belinda Bencic.

She was out of action for a while due to maternal reasons but has managed to pull off a comeback since then. Who knows, maybe she can take back the number one spot, but it will be a tough ask for her given the calibre of her rivals.
