”The Government will Come Up” Sports Ministry on IPL 2020

With the outbreak of coronavirus in India, problems can arise for the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2020). The sports ministry issued a new directive for all the sports federations in the country. According to the notice, the sports federations are ordered to suspend all the sporting events until further notice.
Coronavirus had proven to be a deadly disease. The cases of people infected with COVID-19 are increasing rapidly in India. According to the reports, 166 people have been tested positive for this virus. It is an alarming situating and the government has advised all the citizens to stay inside.

On Thursday, Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju made it clear that the fate of any sports tournament would be decided only after the government comes with an advisory regarding the coronavirus pandemic.
Further quoting BCCI, Rijiju commented that BCCI organize cricketing events and it is not a national sport of India. Moreover, no sport is bigger than the health of the citizens.

“After April 15 the government will come up with new advisory and guidelines according to the situation. BCCI is a body that looks after cricket which is not an Olympic sport. But here it is not the question of the sporting event alone but a question of the safety of the citizens. In an event, there will be thousands of spectators. So it is not just for the sports bodies or sportspersons it is for every citizen of the country,” he said.

BCCI had earlier put a hold on IPL till April 15, 2020, after the government denied to issue the visa to the foreign players. On March 12, the government ordered authorities to avoid mass gatherings and conduct events behind closed doors.
Sourav Ganguly reacted to this saying that there would be no violation of the government rules. Every action would be taken keeping in mind the safety of the citizens.
