Daniil Medvedev Battles Past Stan Wawrinka to Reach First Grand Slam Semifinals at US Open 2019

World No.5 Daniil Medvedev continues his dream run at the US Open 2019 as he battles past the 2016 champion, Stan Wawrinka 7-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 to reach the first Grand Slam semifinal of his short career.

Set One

Daniil Medvedev started the match on a high note as he broke Stan Wawrinka in his opening service game of the match. The Swiss, however, earned an opportunity to break back in the very next game but couldn’t capitalize on to it.

While changing ends at 4-3, Daniil Medvedev called for the trainer and, after consultation, took a medical timeout. The Russian then got the inside of his upper left thigh treated and taped. After the seven-minute break, Medvedev returned to the court only to cut the tape again in the next changeover.

While serving for the opening set, Medvedev saved two break points from 0-40 down but cracks on the third with a forced error on the set as Stan Wawrinka leveled back the set at 5-5.

The set then went on till the tiebreaker with both the players holding their service game till 6-6. The audience saw a see-saw of points between the two during the tiebreaker with both tied at 6-6. Medvedev then took the next two points to secure the first set 7-6(6) in almost an hour.

Set two

In the second set, Daniil Medvedev broke Wawrinka in the fourth game as he took a comfortable lead of 3-1. The Russian took full advantage of the Swiss’ blunders in the second set to wrap up a comfortable second set 6-3  in just 33 minutes.

Set Three

Stan Wawrinka denied an easy match for the next-generation star as he broke early in the second game of the third set.

While serving for the set at 5-3, the 33-year-old faced four breakpoints, denying them all to close out the third set 6-3 after an 11-minute game.

Set Four

Daniil Medvedev was back on track in the fourth set as he broke the 3-time Grand Slam champion in his opening service game. Wawrinka, however, earned a chance to break back in the next game but couldn’t grab the opportunity as the Russian lead the set 3-0.

Daniil Medvedev once again broke Stan Wawrinka to take a lead of 5-1 in the fourth set. While serving for the match, Medvedev held his serve and won the game, set, match.

He will face either Roger Federer or Grigor Dimitrov in the semifinals of the US Open 2019.
