Daniil Medvedev Suffers a Major Setback Before Australian Open 2020

Russian World Number five Daniil Medvedev defeated Fabio Fognini 6-2, 6-2 to claim the Diriyah Tennis Cup title in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. After his victory, he announced his withdrawal from next week’s Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi, UAE pertaining to an injury.

World Number five Daniil Medvedev stated that he has problems with his hip. Towards the end of the season 2019, it was a major setback. The Russian faced hip issues and that led him to wrap up his season with a four-match losing streak. The injury might cause a hindrance to his appearance at the Australian Open 2020. 

For the moment Medvedev will be flying to France and get his hip treated and focus on recuperation. After regaining his fitness he will plan the pre-season schedule which would primarily comprise of his agenda during the Australian summer.

Post his win in Riyadh the Russian shared that he doesn’t know whether his victory remarked the end of the 2019 season or it was the beginning of the new one. In Saudi Arabia, he also shared experiences about playing against the Goliaths of the sport, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

They are two big champions and two unbelievable opponents, but I think facing Novak for my kind of game is easier. The matches against him are close and it excites me,” Medvedev said. 

The Russian wizard Medvedev had a flourishing run during the North American hardcourt summer and later extended his wizardry into the Asian Swing. He reached six straight ATP finals which included the Grand Slam final in New York. This year he won two Masters 1000 titles the first one in Cincinnati and the next crown in Shanghai

However, during the Rolex Paris Masters 2019, his streak was snapped and post that he lost three consecutive matches at ATP Finals in London.
