Juan Martin Del Potro has withdrawn from this year’s Wimbledon, due to continued problems with his left wrist. The Argentine, had his third surgery on the wrist recently, and is currently recovering.

“Juan Martin Del Potro has withdrawn from the Championships 2015 due to recent wrist surgery,” the All England Club said in a statement.

‘Delpo’s’ struggles with his wrist started in 2010,clashing with his rise to the cream of Men’s tennis, when he became World No. 4 for the first time before Australian Open 2010. This followed a successful year for him which ended on a high with Del Potro beating Federer in 5 sets to claim US Open 2009.This injury forced him out for a 9 month period and he was only able to return to competitive tennis in late 2010.

The next 3 years found the Franco Davin protégé in fine fettle, with the high watermark being a Bronze medal at 2012 Olympics. The wrist injury returned to haunt him in 2014, forcing him to retire in a match against Somdev Devvarman at the Dubai Tennis Championships in February. This again forced him to undergo a surgery on the wrist, leading to another year spent away from tennis. The 2013 Argentine ‘Sportsperson of the Year’ returned briefly in January 2015, playing four matches before withdrawing from Australian Open citing the same issue. He is currently undergoing rehabilitation, with no certain date set for his comeback.

Del Potro, who is currently ranked No. 578 in the world owing to the entire previous year spent in wilderness and whose best showing here was a SF appearance, in 2013, has been replaced by Australian Marinko Matisevic.
