Dominic Thiem Destroys Daniil Medvedev to Clinch The Barcelona Open 2019 Title

The Barcelona Open 2019 final began with paying homage to the Spaniard, David Ferrer who will be ending his tennis career within a few days. The Austrian, Dominic Thiem dismantled the World Number 14, Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 6-0 in the championship match in one hour and 14 minutes. 

The final began with the Russian, Medvedev opening the match. In the next game, Dominic Thiem who refused to give Rafael Nadal break points in yesterday’s semifinal landed up giving three break points to the seventh seed, Medvedev in his very first service game.

Subsequently, the Russian was successful in converting the third break point as Thiem sliced a backhand into the net and Medvedev consolidated his break with a 3-0 lead.

However, very soon, Dominic Thiem retaliated by breaking Medvedev to love. The Austrian continued to shower his backhand slices and restore a congruence in the set to 3-3. The World Number five, Dominic Thiem seemed unstoppable and once again broke Medvedev to love and later held five games in a row. Thiem revived his dominance in the match after having a sedate beginning and sealed the set 6-4 with an unplayable forehand.

The second seemed a cakewalk for the NextGen clay courter, Dominic Thiem held the opening game by breaking Medvedev to love. And later bageled out the Russian, Medvedev to lift his Barcelona crown.

It’s the first time in 15 years, the Barcelona Open tournament witnessed a new champion. Over the past decade and a half Rafael Nadal dominated in Barcelona and the Japanese number one, Kei Nishikori won twice in 2014 and 2015. He becomes the second Austrian to lift Barcelona title after Thomas Muster in 1996.

It’s the 13th ATP career title for Dominic Thiem and he becomes the second player in the tennis season 2019 after Roger Federer to win multiple titles. It first title of the year was pulled off at Indian Wells 2019 where he defeated Federer in three sets.
