The Frenchman also lashed out on the governing bodies of tennis for not distributing the prize money proportionately.

Earlier, World No.1 Novak Djokovic planned a relief fund program to financially help the players at the lower echelons during the coronavirus pandemic. The program received widespread support form the various stakeholders of the sport.

However, World No.3 Thiem refused to contribute toward the fund as he felt that none of the tennis players are starving. He explained that “many, many” of those players had not made it to the top because they “don’t put the sport above everything else” and they are unprofessional. He desired to donate his money to those who really need it.

“I don’t agree with (Dominic Thiem) because everyone has to eat, but I like those who say what they think. Thiem exposed himself without fear of being judged. I found him Brave,” Mouratoglou said in an interview as quoted by TennisWorld USA.

“But it is true that the prize money of major tournaments must be reviewed. The top ten wins too much, more balance and fairness would be necessary. Prize money should be distributed according to more egalitarian criteria,” he added.
