We are in the last month of 2020 and we still don’t have the initial ATP calendar for 2021. 2021 is an eagerly awaited season as fans want to see the return of Roger Federer. His two knee surgeries during the pandemic break ended his 2020 season, and now he is poised to return to the tennis court after 13 months.

In a recent interview, Federer said that he is eagerly waiting to play in front of fans, but he is skeptical around the unusual tennis scene that is prevailing because of the pandemic.

“I want to play in front of all the fans soon, but I don’t know what the situation will be. I’m experiencing a situation where I’m not there, but the cheers of all the fans are very helpful in big games.”

2021 is an important year for Federer as he will know where he stands among his peers fitness-wise. Earlier, players had shown signs of rustiness when they returned to play after the pandemic break in September. The Swiss master will take time to shrug off the rustiness as he last played at the 2020 Australian Open.

“This year, I’ve only participated in the Australian Open and some exhibitions. I’ve had two surgeries, so I can’t wait to come back.”

Amid uncertainties, Federer is looking forward to 2021, which is also an Olympic year. It has been a long quest for Federer to win the singles Gold medal for Switzerland. And in six months, with the situation expected to improve, Federer might play the Olympics with a full crowd in Tokyo.

“I still can’t see the schedule for next year (due to the new coronavirus), but I’m looking forward to next year.”

The 2021 Australian Open has been delayed by a few weeks owing to the strict quarantine protocols in Australia. It will now begin on February 8th. The Australian Open organizers were scrambling to schedule the Grand Slam, and now with the delay, ATP will have to cramp up the season again in 11 months.
