“Don’t Think It’s Even Close”: Former Coach Rick Macci Picks Serena Williams as the GOAT

American tennis player Serena Williams is one of the most successful sporting athletes in the modern era. She has accomplished such great feats that she will go down amongst the greats in the game. 

Recently, her former coach Rick Macci spoke about the highly contested debate surrounding the GOAT of tennis. He felt that Serena Williams has registered such splendid performances over the years, and the success earned by her is above any player from recent eras.

The American coach spoke to EssentiallySports on this subject and stated, “To me it’s easy, I’m going to say about the women. I think you judge it on the accomplishments and with your eyes and I don’t think anybody is even close to Serena.”

“I just don’t think it’s even close to nothing against anybody else but I just think she’s incredible and nothing to do with me, she’s just incredible in every way so to me that’s a slam dunk.”

Rick Macci and Serena Williams go way back

Macci coached Serena during her younger days. He has come into prominence as the movie King Richard just released not too long ago. The movie covers the life of the Williams sisters and, most notably, their father Richard Williams. There have also been other key influencers in their lives and Macci was one such personality.

Coming to tennis, Williams has not been seen since her Wimbledon Championships exit. During her opening round match, she sprained her ankle during the early stages and had no option but to retire. After that, she skipped the US Open due to a hamstring injury.

We wish to see her compete on the big stage once again. It will be interesting to see if she can win the 24th Grand Slam title, which she has been chasing for some time now.
