EA sees Battlefield as a service

Few days ago, EA held the company’s Q1 FY22 earnings conference call. During the event, a question was asked whether the game’s massive FPS franchise of Battlefield will receive a new title every other year. Usually, the series launches a new title after a long time, with the most recent one in Battlefield 2042 releasing three years after Battlefield V.

EA CEO Andrew Wilson responded by saying that the company believes that they can move in that direction with the franchise. He mentioned that EA sees it as a service that can constantly churn out content, and they have made plans for it.

“I think that is our orientation, but more importantly, I think you should think about Battlefield as a service.”

Releasing a new title once every two years ‘makes sense’

Wilson later talked about the service EA has set up for Battlefield. He talked about Battlefield Portal that community can use to create custom content for players to experience. Additionally, he also teased that the franchise’s latest mode in Hazard Zone will also act as a ‘foundation’ of live service around the franchise. Finally, he also stated that the series will receive free anchor-to-anchor components between the launches of the games as well. In the end, he ended his response on the future by stating that the biannual release schedule ‘makes sense’ for EA.

“Every other year launch probably makes sense as we think about it today.”

It seems like EA might have plans to have a model similar to the one Activision has for Call of Duty. The games won’t arrive every year because EA doesn’t have more than one studio working on the series like Activision. However, fans might receive different versions of the same franchise, and that cycle might even start with Battlefield 2042.
