The Wimbledon semifinalist explained that she knew Monfils for a long time but there was no communication with him. She said, “We had known Gael for quite some time, as we constantly participated in the same tournaments. But there was very little communication: he knew that I was in a long relationship.”
Svitolina further recalled how she met Gael Monfils in Paris at the end of last year. She recollected, “At the end of last year, after winning the final tournament, I went to celebrate with my Paris friends. I posted a photo on Instagram, and Gael wrote to me. We met and could no longer part.”

Elina Svitolina feels that it was a mere coincidence that the two ended up in Paris at the same time. “It was an amazing coincidence that we were in Paris at the same time, because I live in London now, and Gael, although he himself is from Paris, lives in Geneva. We both came to rest for just a few days,” Svitolina added.
The 24-year-old further explained that she prefers to be with a sportsperson rather than someone who is not connected with sports. She continued, “To be honest, it’s much easier for me to meet with an athlete than with a person who is far from sports. After all, Gael understands me “from and to”, understands what difficulties I face, he can support me when necessary and as needed.”

Elina Svitolina believes that due to the tournaments being stressful if you approach a person incorrectly, you can “cheat” them even more and not help. Moreover, Elina and Gael often participate in the same competitions and travel a lot together.
She further added, “Because it is very difficult to wait for a soul mate from endless trips, especially considering that the tennis season is the longest in sports: we play from January to the end of October, literally every week.”
