Elina Svitolina Sees Off Garbine Muguruza at Wuhan Open 2019

The Ukrainian tennis star, Elina Svitolina defeated the two-time Grand Slam, Garbine Muguruza in her first match at Wuhan Open 2019. Svitolina won 7-5, 6-2 and advanced into the round of 16 of the Chinese event. 

Earlier in Wuhan, Muguruza won her first match after the French Open 2019 by defeating the home favorite, Peng Shuai.

The Spaniard, Muguruza made a strong start by taking a 3-1 lead in the opening set against Svitolina. However, she lost control in the match and Elina Svitolina sealed the set 7-5. World Number 26, Muguruza committed 34 unforced errors and she came up with just 18 winners in the opening set.

The Ukrainian slammed eight winners in the first set and was successful in sealing it. Before this match, Elina Svitolina retired from her round of 16 match in Guangzhou, China due to a knee injury.

However, World Number three, Svitolina gave an impressive performance in Wuhan. She maintained her aggressive tennis against the former World Number one, Muguruza. With Garbine’s unforced errors persisting in the second set, Svitolina sealed her place in the third round of Wuhan Open 2019 by wrapping up the set 6-2.

The third seed, Svitolina will next meet this year’s Cincinnati Open finalist, Svetlana Kuznetsova in the pre-quarterfinals of Wuhan Open 2019. With this loss of Muguruza, she hasn’t won two consecutive matches since Roland Garros 2019.

On the other courts of Wuhan, Caroline Wozniacki was defeated by Hsieh Su-wei in the opening round, but however, the resurged WTA star, Svetlana Kuznetsova defeated the Twainese tennis player in the round of 32.

The fourth seed, Simona Halep is through to the round of 16 in Wuhan by defeating the Wimbledon 2019 semi-finalist, Barbora Strycova.

The teenager, Amanda Anisimova defeated the Grand Slam champion, Sam Stosur and she sets up her round of 32 clash against the second seed, Karolina Pliskova. The top-seed, Ashleigh Barty will meet Carolina Garcia in the round of 32.
