Elina Svitolina Stunned by Sofia Kenin at Rogers Cup 2019

Sofia Kenin upsets the world No.7, Elina Svitolina in straight sets 7-6, 6-4 in the quarterfinals of the Rogers Cup 2019. The American will face the winner between Karolina Pliskova and Bianca Andreescu for the place in the finals.

Elina Svitolina and Sofia Kenin squared off against each other for the second time in their career with the Ukranian star winning their first meeting in the second round of the Indian Wells Masters 2019. However, the 20-year-old leveled the head-to-head to 1-1 after defeating Svitolina in 1 hour and 45 minutes in last-8 of the Canadian Open 2019.

Svitolina was the last woman to lift the Rogers Cup title when the event was held in Toronto. She defeated four top-10 players in her course to the title in 2017.

Whereas, Sofia Kenin lost in the second round of qualifying for the Rogers Cup in Montreal last year. However, the American in the subsequent climbed to a career-high world no. 27 in the next 12 months. She came into the tournament ranked at world no. 29 and will certainly ascend in the WTA ranking after her dream run in Toronto.

Elina Svitolina took comfortable a lead in the first set breaking Sofia Kenin twice to earn a 4-0 lead. However, Sofia Kenin fought back hard to break back the Ukranian twice and leveled the set.

 

The opening set then went on till the tiebreaker. The American dominated the tiebreaker to claim the opening set as Svitolina could not capitalize her 4-0 lead.

Sofia Kenin looked to close the match in straight sets as she broke Elina Svitolina early in the second set. However, the 24-year-old gained a chance to come back into the match at 4-3 as she earned two break points but Sofia Kenin did not drop her level as she saved the two break points to hold her serve.

Svitolina then held her serve to stay in the tournament but it was the American who reached the finishing line as she fixed her position at the semifinals in Toronto after winning the second set 6-4.
