World Number seven, Elina Svitolina faced Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic in the second of Rogers Cup 2019. With the ladies wearing the same Nike gear, the sixth seed, Svitolina steamrolled over Bencic 6-2, 6-4 and reached the quarterfinals of the Canadian event.

The opening set was accompanied by a rain delay and before the play got suspended the former Rogers Cup champion, Elina Svitolina held a 4-2 (40-15) lead in the opening set as Bencic lost her serve in her opening service game.

Post the resumption, Elina Svitolina held a 5-2 lead with a forehand winner on the Bencic’s court.

Wimbledon‘s semifinalist, Svitolina did not take much time to seal the set and effortlessly move closer to her next round encounter in Toronto.

The situations were turning out to be miserable for Bencic as her wobbly form of tennis continued in the second set. Failing to overcome Svitolina’s dominance, the Swiss called the physio and took a Medical Timeout to bandage her left foot when she was 4-1 down in the second set.

After the Medical Timeout, Bencic could break Svitolina’s serve at 4-2 and managed to stay a little longer in the second-round match in Toronto. The next game on Bencic’s serve was a prolonged one. The Swiss woman saved three break points. With Bencic squandering all the challenges and game point opportunities, Elina Svitolina led by 5-2.

While serving for the match, Svitolina had 40-0 lead in the game. A few textbook returns from Bencic took the game to deuce. Bencic maintained her pace in the next two points and survived in the encounter at 5-3.

The signs of making a comeback were reflected in the next game as Bencic held her serve at 5-4. However, on the fifth match point, Svitolina could dislodge the Swiss player.

On the other court, Caroline Wozniacki lost to a Polish 18-year-old, Iga Swiatek.
