The fact that the course will be taught by English Professor Elizabeth Scala to first-year undergraduates in the Liberal Arts Honours Program is also very shocking to fans.
Why is the University providing this course?
There is no definitive answer to why the university chose to teach Taylor Swift’s songwriting style to students, but a Facebook post by the Depart of English from the University of Texas says a lot. The course is named “Literary Contests and Contexts — The Taylor Swift Songbook.”
In the post, they said, “A brand new course for Fall 2022 taught by Dr. Elizabeth Scala provides an introduction to literary studies and research methods that uses the songwriting of @taylorswift as the basis for teaching a wide range of skills. Let’s turn that Easter Egg hunting and reading in detail to academic purposes! First-year @lahonorsut students will be prepared for advanced work in the humanities and potential application to the English Honors Program.”
