One of the fans spotted the instruction that read, “Internet connection required to pair disc drive and PS5 console upon setup.” Bringing the issue to the limelight, the user, through their X account, wrote, “How do you feel about the PS5 disc drive not being able to work without an internet first?” Responding to this, a veteran gaming editor wrote, “Uhhhh…if this is the case, that is highly concerning and very strange. Hardware connectivity shouldn’t be determined by a server that may not always be available.”

Some fans believe it to be a security precaution to make sure the disc drive is authentic and not from a third party. But it has prompted some questions about preservation. However, there being no official clarification on the guideline, the fans weren’t too pleased with the theories.
Fans voice their opinions
As the post sparked a strong discussion online, netizens didn’t hesitate to jump into the discussion.
A user wants the fans to give the bundle a chance, as they believe it might be just a one-time thing.
I suspect it's a licensing thing. The PS3 had a download before you could watch blurays, and it was due to licensing. if you never watched a bluray, sony didn't have a certain license fee to pay. it'll be a one time thing.

The confusion is evident, as a user has another question that has been raised courtesy of the viral post.
This raises another question. if the drive included with the the new slim model is also detachable, is it "pre-paired" out of the box with the console or does it also need an internet connection?

Contrary to the surprised fans, an eSports enthusiast reveals they had already predicted the update and it might be the need of the hour.
While you would expect a drive to be plug and play, remember the console has firmware updates for the drive too inside the main system update.
I would imagine it’s just updates in that way. I expected this tbh.
