However, now there’s no doubt about it, as Activision just made it quite clear. Trusted outlet, CharlieIntel, reported this massive news on its Twitter account, with the following tweet:
“This year’s Call of Duty is a sequel to 2019’s Modern Warfare®, the most successful Call of Duty title to date, and will be the most advanced experience in franchise history,” Activision says in their Q1 2022 Financial Results.

As you can clearly read, Modern Warfare 2 will be the sequel to the game from 2019, which also happens to be the best-selling COD to date. Plus, the upcoming offering will be an even better and “most advanced experience in franchise history”.
The overall situation now looks quite interesting as Activision is also busy in preparing for its merger with Xbox. After the completion of the deal with Microsoft, all of the publisher’s renowned IPs, including CoD, will come under Xbox Game Studios’ boss Phil Spencer. And it looks almost inevitable that he will focus a lot on making this franchise even more iconic in the coming future than what it is right now.
