At first, Asobo Studio was known for its Disney Pixar game adaptations. But three years ago this small French Developer pushed its boundaries to new heights to develop its critically acclaimed and fan-favorite game, A Plague Tale: Innocence. The game currently has an impressive 9/10 rating on steam and an 81% score on Metacritic. Seeing the success of the game, Asobo started working on a sequel that will continue the legacy of their masterpiece.

In anticipation of A Plague Tale: Requiem’s release, PlayStation talked with the game’s director Kevin Choteau. He shared the back-of-the-scene stories and interesting facts about the journey of the game’s development.

He told in the interview how inexperienced they were during the development of the first game. Choteau said, “So we started with the action-adventure on Innocence and did so as noobs, not knowing what we were doing.” But as they worked on the game, they started understanding their mistakes and grew more and more as a team.

According to him, for the sequel, their first priority was to rectify the mistakes and achieve what they couldn’t in the first game. He said, “the idea was to take everything we failed with or did wrong in the first one and try to tackle them.” He added that the “feedback from the players and critics” helped them a lot in reaching this goal.
In the interview, he shared how much they pushed the game in terms of graphics. They wanted to make the game worthy for the next-gen consoles. The environment and the asset were rendered as realistically as possible, especially the main enemies of the game, the Rats. They were “pushed to extreme boundaries.” There were 5000 rats in the first game, but this one will have more than 300,000!

In the ending notes of the interview, Kevin talked about how much this project meant to him and his team. He said this game was really special to him and his team. They had put together, “Things that are stressful” and “happy memories,” to bring this game to reality. The whole experience, according to him, was “like therapy.”

The sequel to Innocence hit the market on October 18, 2022. A Plague Tale: Requiem is an action-adventure stealth video game developed by Asobo Studio and published by Focus Entertainment.
