For the uninitiated, Remedy’s game features two playable protagonists. There’s the FBI agent Saga Anderson in one section while the other has got the mystery novelist Alan Wake. Speaking of the frightening Game Over screen, it usually occurs while playing the missions involving Lake. If he’s about to die, the screen ends up flashing haunting pictures of him in live-action.
Speaking to a news website recently, Alan Wake 2 director Sam Lake revealed that the entire process of making the Game Over screen was inspired by his team’s experience of working on live-action set pieces for Control and Quantum Break. However, the main creative process, in itself, mostly felt like trial and error.

“It felt like we needed to show the horror in between when you die, we need to make it disturbing,” Lake told media outlet IGN. “We had already kind of discovered that this is how we do horror flashes and that’s suitable for it, but then we wanted to create just really striking violent imagery for it.” The whole sequence regarding the screen creation was shot on a film set with Alan Wake’s actor Ilka Villi.

The game will receive two paid expansions going forward. The first DLC, named Night Springs, will mainly focus on the concept of visions and dreams. “Fiction collapses and remains just words on a page. These are those stories… in Night Springs”, reads the FAQ page for the title. Players will get to enter the quest as familiar characters. They will experience multiple self-contained episodes of Night Springs.
Furthermore, there’s a second DLC as well that players will receive. It’s called The Lake House and will consist of a facility situated on the shores of Cauldron Lake. The latter is set up by an independent government organization to conduct secret research. Unfortunately, though, something will go wrong eventually. This specific downloadable content will have two separate adventures while also making the realities of Saga and Alan collide again.
