God of War: Ragnarok’s success is not hidden from anyone. It is pretty evident how Sony Santa Monica’s game became their fastest-selling first-party title ever. The success of The Last of Us 2 is not hidden from anyone either. It was till yesterday the game with the most awards to its credit. Even though it was dethroned by Elden Ring, it was not a small feat.

These games got so successful critically and commercially thanks to the stories they told and the content they offered players. Their being incredibly good-looking was not the only reason for it.

Are God of War and The Last of Us 2 Interactive Movies?

Video games have come a long way from just being a bunch of sprites dancing on our television screens. We have seen them grow from 2D to 3D over the years. From 8Bit consoles to consoles that measure their power in Teraflops, advancements keep on happening in gaming.

Today we are at a point where a single character in a video game has more polygons than Super Mario 64 had in total. But this advancement brought with it a weird new dilemma!

This advancement made it possible for video game developers to create more believable story-focused experiences. Characters showed emotions, the environment became way more believable, and acting in video games became a thing.

And when Naughty Dog launched the Last of Us, people knew, the games have excelled. Now people saw video games as a viable medium of storytelling. Games started getting awards for music and performances and not just their stories.

Besides everything positive that these games brought to the table, some gamers started calling story-focused games interactive movies.

There are games that tell a story with minimalistic interaction from players, but games like God of War and The Last of Us 2 have real gameplay mechanics.

While God of War is a well-designed hack-and-slash game, with numerous selections of weapons and abilities, The Last of Us 2 is an action-adventure horror game with some really impressive stealth mechanics.

These games need some amount of skill to complete and they require players to learn their mechanics to advance further.

So no, God of War and The Last of Us 2 may look somewhat realistic, but they are nowhere close to being just Interactive movies. They are just games that happen to have good stories. But this might be a view that may vary from person to person.
