Nintendo Genius’ Motto for successful pitches

He shared a valuable tip for the game directors. Many directors doubt their pitch and create a Plan B if the audience did not like their initial one. Between two options, it becomes hard to select the desired option. He said, “It’s tempting to approve of both options and leave the actual decision to someone else.”

But he shared his honest opinion on having multiple proposals, too. He said, “With proposals, in particular, you’re better off ditching Plan B entirely.” The Nintendo genius urged the fans to leave the hypothetical and secondary ideas behind and just focus on their original pitch.

Nonetheless, he stated that other suggestions are welcome. But they should be tested later in the project rather than in the beginning. He said, “There should always be an ideal spec to start, and from there you can course-correct to maximize cost-effectiveness.” And the best place to get suggestions is your development team.

Sakurai urges directors to trust their teams for ideas

The Nintendo genius mentioned that the pitch should always start with an ideal point. If a problem arises, then address them as a team. And the whole team should work on solving the problem, not looking for a new idea altogether and calling it Plan B.

In conclusion, Sakurai shared that the pitch should always be Plan A. The pitch should also think about programming and development efficiency as well. Still, the proposal is the starting point of the game.

And it is welcome to evolve as it moves along. The Nintendo genius advised, however, to not twist the game completely out of shape but branch out with new ideas to add to its feature. This will lead to a game that the director and team both are proud of.
