EA recently announced that the upcoming Battlefield 6 first-person shooter will be made available on previous generation consoles. Aside from the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, the game will release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S and PC. They formally announced this via their fourth-quarter earnings for the fiscal year 2021.
According to developers, Battlefield 6 will seek to bring the best out of the hardware of the next-gen consoles. However, the game will be designed in such a way that even their predecessors will be able to run it. During the earnings call, EA’s CEO Andrew Wilson stated, “Battlefield will be available for both current-gen and next-gen as will our sports titles. The reference specifically from our prepared remarks was around the nature of gameplay. What we can do with the fidelity of the game, what we can do with physics, artificial intelligence, and the immersive nature of the game.”
He also spoke about the differences between the current and previous generational versions of the game. According to Andrew, “the amount of players that we can have in the game, and the nature of destruction and those all-new Battlefield moments that are truly next-gen opportunities that we are able to do in the context of our next-gen franchises because of the increased processing power and memory and output of the new consoles.”
