Villain turned antihero, Venom, is one of Spider-Man’s most iconic foes. And he will be pivotal in the story of  Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Venom was teased in the post credits of the first game, and once again shown in Spider-Man: Miles Morales as well. With Venom’s entry into the story perfectly setup, the wall crawler is in for big trouble.

While the question of who is Venom is still a mystery, Insomniac has confirmed that Eddie Brock won’t assume this role in the game. Further, despite numerous indicators pointing to Harry Osborn as the likely host, an official confirmation is still pending.

In the first game, players see Norman enter his secret room and approach the containment where Harry is kept. As Norman approaches the glass and speaks, we see the symbiote react to his presence. Players get to see more of this at the end of Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

In the Miles Morales game, we see the same scene play out from Harry’s point of view. Although this time, the scene also shows Dr. Connors. Norman wants Harry out, but Connors warns him about the dangers and his disease.

So it’s all but confirmed that Harry is Venom, but from what is seen in the Spider-Man 2 trailer and reveals, there’s a chance that Venom could have a different host later on. Checkout the scene below.

The symbiote’s function in healing Harry’s disease takes center stage. Fans can anticipate a deep exploration of how the symbiote initially served as a remedy for Harry. This closely aligns with its comic counterpart’s capacity to mend and amplify its host’s physical attributes.

One of the central elements of the story is the symbiote latching onto Peter so it’s safe to assume that at some point during Peter and Harry’s interaction, the symbiote found a way to takeover Spider-Man. However, the connection between Harry and the symbiote and the extent to which the symbiote has a hold on Harry is something players will only know once they’ve played the game.

As the symbiote establishes a deeper connection with its host, it typically alter’s the host’s personality as well.

The Symbiote’s influence on the host

Fans will get to observe how the symbiote’s bonding influences Harry’s characteristics. In the comics, such bonds have led to enhanced physical prowess, including augmented strength, speed, and agility.

The transformation also carries psychological consequences with the alien life form corrupting the host. The symbiote can exert an impact on the host’s mental state, resulting in shifts in their personality. This is seen in the gameplay trailer when Symbiote Spidey saves a civilian and Miles is confused with the way it happens. The trailer also shows MJ being concerned.

This was also seen in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 when Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man doesn’t pull his punches against Sandman. And let’s not forget his emo hairstyle and the infamous dance. Hurting MJ and Harry in the movie were also classic indicators of how the symbiote can affect the host’s personality.

Similar to the comics, Venom’s weakness is sound waves and fire. Although in the game, it looks unlikely that fire will have an impact, but soundwaves? Definitely! Developers can leverage this susceptibility as both a strategic gameplay element and a plot device within the story.

While drawing inspiration from the comics, it’s crucial to recognize that this rendition of Venom is different from the ones in the comics. Insomniac consistently blends authenticity with creativity when adapting Spider-Man villains.

The game drops hints about the significant roles of both Kraven the Hunter and Venom. Fans eagerly await the crossing of these two antagonist stories and how they collectively shape the game’s overarching narrative.
