Overwatch was long hailed as one of the best gaming franchises of all time. This PvP multiplayer series has been a pinnacle in the esports scenario. But as things stand, the glory of this popular franchise seems to be waning day by day.

After the game was released on Steam, it did not have a great time there. The game is continuously getting reviewed. But the game director doesn’t seem to be that tense and has some clear optimistic thoughts about the game.

Overwatch’s franchise has been on the decline for quite a few years. The declining process was accelerated by the arrival of Overwatch 2 in 2022. Fans didn’t like the game at all. Blizzard Entertainment has only one way of regaining its lost glory: the new Invasion expansion pack. This PvE add-on pack was meant to pull the game out of the criticism it is getting and place it at the summit, on which the game was used to rule. But even the new expansion pack has failed to revive the game.

Overwatch 2 recently launched on Steam on August 10 in the hope that the game would get closer to the players. And guess what? This game has quickly become the worst-reviewed game ever. Steam250 is a renowned website that tracks the 100 worst games of all time on the basis of user reviews. As per Steam250, Overwatch 2 has scored just 0.96 based on 92,028 votes. This game also has an approval rating of just 10% (percentage of positive Steam user reviews), which is the lowest ever for any game on Steam.

The Director Addresses the Problem

Despite the game’s miserable condition, Overwatch 2 director Aaron Keller is still having optimistic vibes. Recently, on a blog on the game’s official website, Keller shared some thoughts about the game and also responded to the review bombing on Steam. Keller thinks the game is i in the “best State it’s ever been.”

Keller also addresses: “We also launched on Steam last week, and, although being review-bombed isn’t a fun experience, it’s been great to see lots of new players jump into Overwatch 2 for the first time. Our goal with Overwatch 2 has been to make the game more accessible than ever for more people than ever before.”

He then went on to explain the reason for this huge dissatisfaction among the fans regarding the game. He thinks fans couldn’t accept the fact that the much larger PvE project, which was announced in 2019, was later canceled by Blizzard. Fans were really rooting for campaign-based story mode gameplay in a larger aspect, but the project never surfaced. So, it was quite natural that fans wouldn’t be compensated by just an expansion.

Although some fans went on to try out the new invasion to compensate for the loss of a bigger PvE project, as things went further, the story mode of Invasion turned out to be a nightmare for casual gamers. Legendary, the hardest difficulty of Invasion, truly justifies its name. Only 1.6% of attempts to complete the Gothenburg mission on legendary difficulty were successful. Making the scene worse, completion of the Toronto mission on the same difficulty has only 0.7%

But out of nowhere, this DLC has become a slow poison for the game. The director, on the other hand, holds some hopeful thoughts.
