The latest Call of Duty has garnered a mixed reception. However, even after a series of strong criticisms around Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, the game has made it to the top-selling list hours after its launch. Apparently, the latest installment to the Modern Warfare series is off to a promising start, despite negative reception to its Campaign. But what’s the reason behind the never-ending success story of Call of Duty?

Ever since Call of Duty: Modern Warfare3 went into beta, the title was subjected to strong criticism and bug reports. Its predecessor Modern Warfare 2 had faced some similar heat during its run and therefore fans had a lot of expectations with the follow-up project. Moreover, Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision only added to the hope. Unfortunately, the beta for MW3 couldn’t impress the FPS fanatics initially. However, within hours of the full release, the tables have turned for the game.

It is important to note that both CS2 and Fortnite have also been enjoying the fan spotlight lately for individual reasons. While CS2 has been evolving into a better game with constant updates, the Fortnite OG season has brought back some classics from the older seasons. Amidst all these events, MW3’s achievement testifies to the impact of the franchise.

The debate of what makes CoD irresistible for FPS enthusiasts has always been hot. Besides the fact that MW3 was subjected to poor reviews, the numbers wouldn’t surprise most gaming pundits and fanatics. Even the developers have been confident with the fact that there’s “no going back” for a Call of Duty fan.

Is the Multiplayer mode the only reason for CoD’s recent success?

The FPS franchise has been a fan-favorite, but over the years there has been a debate around a possible decline in single-player mode. The beta of Modern Warfare 3 certainly did no favors. But the single-player mode received most of the heat and some even called the multiplayer mode, ‘the only savior for the project.’

As per IGN review, “Modern Warfare 3 is the worst single-player outing for COD in its lifetime; a duct-taped mess of missions, many of which are quite literally ripped from Warzone, that frequently plays like DMZ multiplayer with bots. It’s almost certain to be remembered as Call of Duty’s lowest point when it comes to single-player design.”

The multiplayer review also wasn’t as convincing as the developers would have hoped, but still struck excitement for the fans. Well, it never fails to. So, analyzing the sales charts, a lot of fans deduced the multiplayer mode to be a major contributor to the hype.
