Ever since it was revealed that Call of Duty Modern Warfare II was going to have a two-year life cycle, speculations emerged regarding its roadmap and overall future. Later, they turned out to be just rumors. That’s because Activision had already made it clear to release a brand new premium in 2023.

And here we are, waiting for this year’s Modern Warfare III installment. Although the publisher never made it official, some insiders still believe that the upcoming game is nothing but a paid DLC expansion of MWII. And that it’s just a money-minting strategy by charging around $70 (standard pricing) for a downloadable content. But is it really the case? Or is there any reason to believe the rumors?

Following the launch of MWII last year, a report from Bloomberg had revealed that it would receive a premium expansion in the second year. Bloomberg’s journalist Jason Schreier claimed that CoD 2023 will be “a full premium release because they’re (Activision) probably going to market and sell it as a $70 game with new single- and multiplayer content”.

But there’s been no actual announcement from publisher Activision itself. Few other media outlets did mention, a few months ago, that the company never had an intention to go the DLC way. Apparently, there was an email sent to certain websites in which Activision reiterated on its willingness to release a new, standalone Call of Duty premium in 2023.

Still, the general response from the players has been negative so far. Many of them think Modern Warfare III is just a $70 paid expansion. And that it’s not going to offer anything substantial.

Modern Warfare III is more than just a paid expansion of MWII

There’s a valid and logical explanation to why one should not consider MWIII a DLC. To begin with, the game will have its own Multiplayer experience, a completely new Campaign story, and also co-op mode. This is something industry insider CharlieIntel’s co-founder has tried to explain. According to him, the reactions towards the title are unnecessarily harsh.

Moreover, Modern Warfare III will also offer players a great opportunity to carry over all of their purchased content from MWII. On top of everything else, it will also have a Zombies mode – a first for the MW sub-series. Now, this is actually something that makes it way more than being a mere expansion, right?

One can assume if Sledgehammer’s game was to come in 2024, people would have responded differently. Then, they wouldn’t have considered it a $70 DLC at all. All things considered, the ongoing criticism doesn’t seem to be justified.
