Counter-Strike was born as a modification to the code of Half-Life, Valve’s claim to success. That game and its engine were so successful back in 1999 that people were using it to build exciting new mods. Moreover, the fact that someone decided to create a competitive multiplayer game was pretty mind-blowing.

Eventually, Valve decided to give it its official stamp of approval, and the series officially began its life in 2000. It was followed by games that were mere updates called Counter Strike Zero and Counter Strike Source. This stopped when the Global Offensive launched back in 2012. It even launched for PlayStation and Xbox. Now, after years of releasing small updates and giving them names like Zero and Source, a real sequel, Counter-Strike 2, is here.
