Creator of Super Smash Bros. Feels Ultimate Is the Last Stop of the Series, at Least for Now

Super Smash Bros. the most popular crossover fighting game series might be coming to an end. The game which has been around since January 1999 has had many versions of the game that spanned across Nintendo devices. With Super Smash Bros. Ultimate being the latest, the creator Masahiro Sakurai has some heartbreaking news for fans.
Along with being the lead for a project like Super Smash Bros., Masahiro Sakurai is also known for his YouTube channel where he frequently posts videos to help aspiring game developers with tips to make games. In the latest video on the channel, the Director announces some news that has disappointed many fans.
The Ultimate Super Smash Bros. is already out

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was dropped back in 2018. Ever since then, the game has been considered the most ambitious title in the series. What makes this game special is that it achieved this by including every fighter from the franchise’s history. The game also introduces new characters and offers paid DLC with popular third-party characters like Sora, Joker, and Steve.
The game’s most notable feature was its inclusivity, featuring every fighter from past games, even ones from third-party franchises like Persona 5. This extensive character roster delighted fans and pushed the game towards success.

Sakurai expressed uncertainty about the future of the Super Smash Bros. series. He acknowledged that they successfully made players happy with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, but given the game’s enormous size and scope, he finds it challenging to envision creating another entry that could surpass it.
In a thought-provoking moment, Sakurai said “Every time, we managed to make a game that I had previously thought impossible, so I can’t say for certain there won’t be another, but I do think it would be difficult to push it any further than we have.”
Although he doesn’t definitively rule out another entry, but implies that it would be difficult to push the series further in terms of content and ambition.

In the past, Sakurai indicated that he couldn’t envision the series continuing without his involvement, even if he expressed an openness to such a possibility. He acknowledged the importance of the Super Smash Bros. franchise for Nintendo and suggested that making another game would require considerable effort and collaboration.
Sakurai mentioned his desire to continue working with Nintendo in some capacity, even if he steps back from active game development. He acknowledged the monumental success of the game, which has become the third best-selling title on the Nintendo Switch, with over 31.77 million copies sold by June 2023. Considering this, he has taken a step back until any official plans on working on a new title might come up.

With that said, it looks like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate might be the last version of the game for a while. Until new ideas come up that let Nintendo outdo everything they have achieved with Ultimate, there is a chance that the game will become dormant.
