To the delight of every College Football fanatic out there, EA Sports announced their return to the maniacal series. It is the first new game in the series in 6 years.

The previous edition in NCAA Football 14 had the then Michigan Wolverines Quarterback Denard Robinson. It was one of the most successful sports games ever as it sold over a million copies.

College Football and the 6 year hiatus

NCAA Football was one of the most popular video games on consoles for players wanting to play as a part of their college program or play for their alma mater. EA Sports can only use the team’s proper names and its uniforms, mascots or stadiums, but can’t use the players as the NCAA prohibits their amateur students to use their name, image or likeness so the game had fake rosters.

EA Sports discontinued College Football after a player filed a lawsuit against the game for using the player’s likeness. The lawsuit claimed that it was against the law for EA Sports to create players that bear similarities to the real life players of the teams. They later settled the lawsuit in 2016, but it meant the end of the series of video games for the foreseeable future.

Other details about the game

EA Sports has yet to give any major updates about the game since it’s still too early to tell. The developers have yet to complete their agreement with the Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC) as they hold the rights to the team names, uniforms, and mascots for most of the FBS teams. However, the NCAA’s rules for not being able to use the players’ likeness still stand. The developers have also announced that the game won’t release in 2021 and that it will arrive in 2022 at the earliest.

It would be pretty interesting to see if the return of the College Football series will lead to the return of the equally popular NCAA Basketball series. They too discontinued the series following the lawsuit that led to the discontinuation of NCAA Football series. But the game surely opens the door for the franchise to return. Fans are already delighted about the return of their chance to play for their favorite college teams.
