Remember the Witcher universe-inspired multiplayer game codenamed ‘Project Sirius’ announced over a year ago? Well, the project hasn’t progressed any further in terms of official updates. However, a series of events that have occurred during the project’s development have invited some strong speculations and theories around CD Projekt’s visionary collaboration with The Molasses Flood. So, are the rumors of the Witcher universe’s “most innovative” adaptation getting canceled true? If not, where is ‘Project Sirius’?

Ever since CD Projekt Red announced working on an intriguing multiplayer project codenamed Sirius under the label of Witcher World in October 2022, fans were highly invested in what followed. Moreover, the project being planned in association with the Indie developers The Molasses Flood, the expectations were already set high. More so, the CDPR’s acquisition of The Molasses Flood in 2021 already had the fans speculating about an exciting lineup of projects. But for over a year now the radio silence on the progress of Project Sirius has persisted. Fortunately, some recent events hint toward some positivity.

Among all the exciting blueprints the Cyberpunk developers unveiled in October last year, Project Sirius seemed to be the highlight. Apparently, the journey since the announcement has been a rollercoaster for the game. From rumors of the game being canceled due to various internal conflicts to impairment charges by the parent company, Project Sirius has seen it all.

But what exactly is this Witcher-inspired Project Sirius? An innovative take on The Witcher universe telling an unforgettable story for existing Witcher fans and new audience” the official announcement made by the CDPR stated. The multiplayer project is planned to cater to not just The Witcher fans but also entice brand new audiences who were introduced to the magical dark world through the Netflix TV series. Also, it sparked another theory of the project following a non-linear format of storytelling.

CDPR filing an impairment charge

According to a report published in March this year, CDPR re-evaluated The Molasses Flood Witcher game and filed an impairment charge as a result. The statement came out as a huge setback for the fans who had been looking forward to a possible update on Sirius anytime soon. “The aforementioned decision is based on results of evaluation of the scope and commercial potential of the original concept of Project Sirius, and ongoing work on formulating a new framework for this project”, the official statement read.

Following the re-evaluation of the game’s value potential in the market, analysts made striking projections. However, on April 3 came the most exciting official update on The Witcher adaptation Multiplayer after the cancellation rumors.

During a financial earning call, the CEO of CD Projekt answering a query stated, “So this is a project which is, I would say, insourced. It’s also new to us in terms of design and format. For those reasons, it’s very different from the big productions we are known for. To stay competitive, we have to keep looking for new ways to extend our franchises.”

The introduction of a new framework

The next update on the multiplayer came in May when the community got to know that the game had received a new set of frameworks. But before the gaming fans could celebrate the new update another rough news hit the web.

A project that had initially begun under the vision of 60 developers faced layoffs. “The concrete number of employees we parted ways with is 21 team members in the US and eight in Poland”, the company’s spokesperson revealed in an interview.

After the layoffs, there wasn’t much that surfaced about the progress of the game until now! The most recent update has yet again re-ignited the excitement built around the long-awaited innovation in the Witcher universe.

A job posting for The Molasses Flood’s Boston headquarters came up on LinkedIn recently. In order to develop “spaces set in the Slavic open world of The Witcher,” it was mentioned that a “Senior or Principal Level Designer” was required. A few months ago, The Molasses Flood’s game, Project Sirius, was touted as “one of the most innovative games to ever grace The Witcher franchise” amid a reorganization of CDP’s objectives.

If the listing is taken into account it seems like the project is still in quite an early stage of production and might take a while to get to the next phase of production. Moreover, for a project that visions itself as the “most innovative” of The Witcher franchise, you’ll have to give the developers all the time they need to catch up to the promises.

Certainly, the efforts CD Projekt and The Molasses Flood are making to create the multiplayer adventure even after so many ups and downs testifies to the potential this game might have.
