The one and 0nly Legendary Pictures picked film rights to Mass Effect in 2010. It is the studio behind the most loved Batman Begins. Unfortunately, that movie never came out, and fans may never get to see the Blasto film of their dreams.

Well, this is quite heartbreaking. The most expected game, Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, was released last month. The timing was quite special. It landed at the times when Hollywood has taken a keen interest in the video game and its storyline, from Resident Evil and Assassin’s Creed (Netflix) to Last of Us (HBO) and Fall out (Amazon). The project director of Mass Effect Legendary Edition spoke to Business Insider about what exactly happened behind the scene.

Behind the scenes of Mass Effect

‘It felt like we were always fighting the IP. What story are we going to tell in 90 to 120 minutes? Are we going to do it justice?” Walter said.

He also added that after some changes in the Legendary leadership, the studio wanted to move towards the television a bit more. The producers thought it is best to start over again.

But then it never picked up again after that, not for lack of trying”.

Walter also went out to explain how writing Mass Effect was more like writing a television series with episodes. ”When we built out a Mass effect game, we have a backbone or an overall story that we want to tell, but each level and mission is like its own TV episode. It doesn’t get written ahead of time. It gets written at the time that we get to it. So it gets added to the main story and sometimes the main story gets adjusted.

Walter sees the TV series as more fit for the adaptation of video games. He also said that a television series would suit Mass Effect more. He said, ” If you are going to the story that’s as fleshed out as ‘Mass Effect,’ television is the way to do it. There’s a natural way it fits well with episodic content.” He further added that it was a cool experiment but that’s what we should not take from video games in terms of storytelling.
