Hironobu Sakaguchi’s reputation precedes him. The man is best known for creating Square Enix’s most celebrated gaming franchise Final Fantasy. Following the success of Final Fantasy 16 this year, fans are looking forward to what’s next from the developing giant. Apparently, the stage is all set for another Sakaguchi masterpiece!

The director and creator of the original Final Fantasy series has always set new standards of expectations through his works. And gamers can never get enough of his works. Thus, when the creator announced his plans with an “announced dark fantasy game,” the players were invested. Ever since then, there hasn’t been any update on the progress, until now! The Square Enix veteran himself gave an update on his next project.

The Final Fantasy creator, through a recent tweet, informed his fans about his health. In addition to the health check-up update, the latter revealed that he has started working on his next project while his latest health check-up was approved by the medics. Well, two good updates in a tweet! I am grateful that I was able to start production on my new work and that my medical checkup went well,” the tweet translates.

This latest tweet was enough to fuel the speculations about what might be the creator working on. Apparently, most of the theories deduced the new project to be the “dark fantasy” game Sakaguchi had talked about last year. For those unaware, in December 2022, Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu published a statement by the creator talking about his next announced visionary title.

I was thinking of retiring next year, but I decided to keep on going… . I also can’t stop playing Final Fantasy XIV, so I’ll see you in Eorzea. I’ve also started writing the scenario for an unannounced dark fantasy game which is now in development,” the statements read.

What makes this “dark fantasy” project more exciting is the fact that Sakaguchi hasn’t been directly involved in writing and directing Square Enix games for a while now. Thus, the next Sakaguchi association, as suggested, would be the homecoming of the legend as a hardcore creator!

The legacy of the Square Enix veteran

If you’re a fan of role-playing video games, you might be aware of the strong influence Sakaguchi has had on the evolution of role-playing video games. Apart from Final Fantasy, there are plenty of games that testify to the genius of Hironobu Sakaguchi.

Blue Dragon, Terra Battle, Super Mario RPG (1996), Party Wave, and many more are examples of the titles associated with Sakaguchi. Moreover, his most recent RPG Fantasian was released as an exclusive for Apple arcades and also received phenomenal critical acclaim worldwide. The game scored 80 on Metacritic.

As reported by VGC, at the Magic 2023 festival, he spoke about Fantasian, where he stated, “We have received many requests to release the game on PC too, and there have also been requests for a sequel so we would like to continue working as hard as possible to meet their expectations.”
