Sources indicate Sony’s cloud streaming service, codenamed ‘Project Cronos’ will come out in March next year. This service was under development for over five years before this.

Cloud video game streaming continues to be a hot topic of discussion. With Nvidia investing a significant amount of resources into this area, Sony was not going to be one-upped. The work for PlayStation’s cloud streaming service began over five years ago. This can simply be attributed to how advanced the PlayStation 5‘s SSD is!

Codenamed ‘Project Cronos’, Sony’s motivations to start five years ago stem from their own work. You see, in order to create infrastructure for the streaming service compatible with the PlayStation 5’s SSD, Sony had to start early. The SSD’s advancements are so far ahead that it looks like Sony suffered from their own success.

This has the potential to take cloud gaming to an entirely new level. The service currently offered for some PlayStation Plus members is a step forward in terms of how gamers access games. Through cloud streaming, Sony can reinforce a major chunk of its player base, games become much more accessible. Sony aims to enhance the PlayStation Plus Premium benefits, revealing this on their website.

In the blog, they said, “When this feature launches, cloud game streaming for supported PS5 titles will be available for use directly on your PS5 console. That means as a Premium member, it’ll be easier to jump into your favorite games without downloading them first onto your PS5 console. Our goal is to add this as an additional benefit to PlayStation Plus Premium as part of our ongoing efforts to enhance the value of PlayStation Plus.”
