A game made with numerous cutbacks and a game that lacked any sort of visual flare still ended up winning the hearts of countless children and adults. The king here was level design—the game that rewarded players for taking risks. That’s exactly what defined this series for everyone, a platformer that is challenging yet fun.

The Legend of Zelda

Shigeru Miyamoto created Super Mario Bros. and was lauded for his achievement, but he wanted to do much more. He was also a person who loved Peter Pan, and he loved fantasy books. So, he decided to give his fans an experience that was a combination of all those things.

He designed a green tunic-wearing character, just like Peter Pan. Nintendo called that character Link; someone at Nintendo said he was named this because they saw him as a link between players and the game. And then they gave players one thing that has become a staple of these games nowadays, with games like Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – freedom.

Yes, it was a small grid-based game, yet for children, exploring that world was like going on a real adventure. That sense of wonder is what keeps people coming back to this series to this day.

Super Metroid

Platformers were fun; going on an adventure in a green tunic is mysterious, but what about exploring some undiscovered planets? What about looking for a dangerous alien species on that planet and eradicating it?

Super Metroid was the game that gave players this experience. Explore, fight enemies, find new abilities, and, did I say explore? Once again, this series has popularised this structure to such an extent that fans still cannot get enough of it, and that’s why Metroid Dread was such a success.

Super Mario Kart

Most Nintendo Switch owners nowadays have Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on their system. It’s not even a wild guess; it is one of the best-selling games on the system. Nintendo users love this Kart racer, and it’s nothing to scoff about either; it’s an excellent-looking game with impeccable gameplay.

As with any Nintendo Classic, this one too started with Shigeru Miyamoto wanting to give Nintendo fans a particular type of experience. The ability to play against each other while also making it chaotic and fun. This game was the ultimate friendship destroyer back then; it’s no surprise people cannot forget it.
