Fresh US Sales Projections Hint at the Switch Crossing an Iconic Nintendo Console in 2023

Nintendo is truly having a great time this year as it seems to be competing against itself only. On one hand, all its games released this year are performing brilliantly in terms of swaying the players. And then there are two of its most popular consoles, going head-to-head with each other in terms of selling the most number of units in the US.

Well these two consoles are the Nintendo Switch and the Wii. The latter is the predecessor of the latest handheld device from the Mario maker. While the Wii has had an amazing run since its original debut, the Switch seems to be rapidly catching up on its figures now.

Nintendo Switch is just few million units away from surpassing Wii’s record in the US

The Wii was initially unveiled in the United States in November 2006, as the fifth major generation of consoles from Nintendo. On the other hand, the Switch was launched in 2017 and since then, it has captured various markets in the world when it comes to selling millions of units.

Speaking just about the US, however, then the Wii is still leading over its modern counterpart.

According to VGChartz‘s recent report, the Wii has sold an estimated 37,381,068 units in America. On the other hand, the Nintendo Switch has sold an estimated total of 35,622,126 units so far in the US.

It seems clear, looking at the figures, that the Wii is still ahead of the latest generation of Nintendo’s console series. But it won’t be the case going forward, especially in the next year.

The overall gap between the two devices is not huge now, being at 1.76 million units. And it will only decrease further due to Switch expected to sell more units in the coming months.

Considering the ongoing projections, made by VGChartz, the Switch will soon surpass the record of Wii in the US. And it will likely do that in the early phase of 2023 itself.

In another news, Nintendo is currently preparing for the next batch of its upcoming games this year. Following the success of Pokemon Legends: Arceus, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, and Switch Sports, all eyes are now set on the likes of Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.
